We feel seen and represented by popular media. 

We learn about historical figures who look like us. 

Our voices are heard when policy decisions are made. 

Not everyone enjoys these privileges. 

When we bring those stories to the forefront, we can start building solutions. We can design a world that works for everyone. 

Our October roundup includes articles that bring light to issues faced by many historically marginalized groups. 

DART launches effort to reimagine public transit - The Business Record

As the Des Moines metro area continues to grow, public transit is key to ensuring the entire community has access to everything they need to thrive. Leaders at DART are hopeful that their efforts to reimagine our public transit system will better serve our community’s needs.

Did you know that the Iowa Supreme Court was the first court in the United States to strike down a law requiring school segregation? Susan Clark was denied entry to a public school in Muscatine due to the color of her skin in September 1867, leading to “an act fundamental to desegregation of Iowa schools.” 

Shades of Inequity: Why It’s Crucial to Diversify Medical Illustrations

Research shows that bodily illustrations in medical textbooks tend to depict white and/or lighter-skinned people of color to show how illnesses present themselves. This leaves many doctors misdiagnosing diseases in darker skinned people, leading to more adverse medical results.

Black Iowa News—an independent news platform designed to highlight Black perspectives, showcase the Black community, and amplify the voices of Black Iowans—has released an 8- page voter guide statewide. The guide covers topics such as election deadlines, ID requirements, and how to manage election anxiety.
