At CultureALL’s annual volunteer/staff gathering, we celebrate all the people working behind the scenes so that our CultureALL Ambassadors can focus their attention and talents on creating outstanding cultural experiences that spark a desire in Iowans of all ages to value our diversity. We do this by awarding the Tanaka Honor In memory of Itaru “Terry” Tanaka.
CultureALL staff tries our best to provide any support the CultureALL Ambassadors need, but sometimes that is not enough. And where the CultureALL Amassadors get the greatest amount of support is from their families and friends. These dedicated individuals may not have the time to become Ambassadors, but they make outstanding contributions to our organization.
Terry Tanaka, as the husband of CultureALL Ambassador Yoko Tanaka, was an ardent supporter of hands-on educational activities. He saw the value of passing on cultural customs down to younger generations and he inherently understood the ways that cultural diversity benefits a community.
As a young man, Tanaka San left his family in Yokohama, Japan, to learn both a new language and culture so that he could make his way in the “land of opportunity.” He dreamed big and wanted more, never taking anything for granted, and never becoming complacent. He made his dreams come true, combining drive and discipline to lead an extraordinary life. In 2002, he bought Microsoy Corporation based in Jefferson, Iowa and served as its CEO. At work and among family, his demands for precision and perfection were as encouraging to others as his everlasting smile.
Through his family’s annual gift to CultureALL, Terry Tanaka’s legacy lives on — celebrating and supporting the valuable work of CultureALL Ambassadors.
