Scottish Games and Recreation

Join CultureALL Ambassador Reid Miller and experience the culture of Scotland through traditional Scottish games, dances, and music.

Workshop Description

Games play a considerable part in Scottish culture. Traditional  Scottish games include tossing things like stones, cabers (tapered poles), cow pies (dried, of course), bools (big marbles), and so on.  Other games include hopscotch, tig (tag), plain clappy, dancing, music playing, and more, often accompanied by poem or rhyme.  Many of these Scottish games are known by other names and played in other cultures around the globe.

In this workshop, students will learn some Scottish games and dances, with an emphasis on valuable and universal lessons such as cooperation, fair play, gracious losing, and humble winning that apply in all nations and cultures.
