Photographer Ryan Morrison was on hand to capture some photos of our recent Culture Day at Valerius Elementary School in Urbandale, where CultureALL Ambassadors from nine different world cultures presented workshops for 255 K-12 students.
Valerius Elementary went all out on its Culture Day – Kindergartners had workshop sessions with three different CultureALL Ambassadors, and students in grades 1-5 were able to learn about five different cultures. Here are some of the highlights:
Yolandi Carrick – one of our newest Ambassadors – shared stories about cultural diffusion in her home country of South Africa.
Ambassador Clemen Wilcox shared her Colombian culture and Cumbia – a dance popular in South America.
Students learned to use chopsticks with Ambassador Alex Akiyama of Japan,
enjoyed Scottish Games and Recreation with Reid Miller,
and heard cowboy songs of the Americas from Ambassadors Ed East and Karin Stein of the Latin American musical group Calle Sur.
Valerius Elementary Fun & Hospitality
Our Ambassadors had a great time with the students at Valerius who were eager to volunteer during hands-on activities.
Lunchtime is a rewarding part of every Culture Day because it gives Ambassadors a chance to get to know each other and talk about their cultures. The staff at Valerius made the day extra special by preparing a potluck of international dishes for them to sample. Our Ambassadors were touched that so much time, thought, and effort went into making them feel welcomed – the food, they said, was fantastic!
We would like to thank the students, teachers, and staff at Valerius for welcoming us into their school. Thanks also to our wonderful photographer Ryan Morrison for helping us preserve some memories of this wonderful day – it was a great way to finish out the school year!
