The weather may be turning colder, but the preparation for the Brazilian Ball is heating up. The activities team has been hard at work planning the entertainment for the Ball. Here are just a few of the groups who will be performing:
The dance group Brazilian Moves offers cultural immersion through dance that promotes the diversity of Brazilian culture. This local company, headed by Director Patricia O’Connell and Choreographer Celle Banks, offers choreographed presentations, dance workshops, and classes throughout Central Iowa. Their presentations include beautiful authentic costumes of regional Brazilian dances. We are looking forward to their performance at the Ball!

Choro, the virtuosic predecessor to samba, arose in Rio De Janeiro during the late-19th century. The cosmopolitan atmosphere and multicultural explosion, rivaling that of New Orleans at the time, gave birth to a music that blended the intricate syncopation of African polyrhythm with the serpentine harmonic language of European classical tradition – “classical music played with bare feet and calluses on the hands.”
