Board Visioning results and Red update
During our board meeting, on the 5th of January, a great saying surfaced thanks to one of our board members. “Americans of different cultures” was the saying. Does it have a different connotation or feel then maybe immigrants or refugees? Do the labels we put on people really carry weight on how we see the people associated with that label? How much of a factor does the word immigrant or refugee play in your opinion of a person? All these questions poured into my mind as soon as the words were uttered.
So, back to the board meeting. To kick of the meeting we had a special visit from the Assistant Superintendent of the West Des Moines Community Schools. She spoke to the board about what impact our cultural workshops have had on the schools, what more could be done and where she saw the organization going. We were also surprised by some wonderful news which I will share with you a little later. The day ended with such enthusiasm that we scheduled a second meeting later this month. The theme for the second meeting is action.
In other news, Sherry and I spent last night at the Zakery’s Bridge book signing which was held at the Red China Bistro. There were over 50 people in attendance and a wide variety of organizations, business and community members were represented.

Within 15 minutes of the event the line for signatures began to form. The food you see on the right was absolutely delicious.
