The 2017 Principal Charity Classic is June 6-11 at Wakonda Club in Des Moines. Over the past 10 years this annual PGA Tour Champions tournament has distributed more than $10 million to Iowa children’s charities. This year’s tournament is June 6-11 at Wakonda Club.
Birdies for Charity is a special initiative that helps local charities raise money for children’s programs through the Principal Charity Classic. Tournament sponsors Sammons Financial Group and Wells Fargo have pledged to match every dollar raised by 10%. By “watching the birdies” – and making a pledge to donate based on how many birdies are made during the tournament – you can help CultureALL raise additional dollars to support our global education programs.
What’s a Birdie?
If you don’t play golf, you might be wondering.
A “birdie” is a score of one stroke better than “par” for any golf hole on the course. “Par” is the normal expected score of a golf professional on any given hole. For example, on a par 4 hole a score of 3 is a birdie. Score two under par and you’ve made an “eagle.” Score one over par and you have made the dreaded “bogey.”
How You Can Help
There are two ways that you can support CultureALL through Birdies for Charity at the 2017 Principal Charity Classic:
- Make a one-time flat donation – you decide how much to give, and make your gift right away.
- Pledge a per-birdie amount of at least $0.05 for every birdie scored by PGA Tour Champions during the tournament. Your gift is calculated at the end of the tournament.
The number of birdies scored each year can fluctuate due to unforeseeable conditions. Over the past 9 years the average number of birdies made was 808. At $0.05 per birdie that would be a donation of $40.40.
You can make your gift or pledge online through the Principal Charity Classic Donation Page:

Guess The Birdies and Win
When you complete your pledge form, you have the option to guess the number of birdies that will be made during the 2017 tournament for the chance to win prizes through the annual Guess the Birdies Competition. One grand prize will be determined by a random drawing among all participants who correctly guessed the total number of birdies made. Additional prizes will also be awarded through random drawings.
The Benefits of Giving through the 2017 Principal Charity Classic
There are no administrative fees when you make your pledge through the Birdies for Charity program – 100% of your contribution will go directly to CultureALL.
Your donation is 100% tax deductible.
Every dollar collected between now and July 31, 2017 will be matched by 10%, making the value of your contribution even greater!
By donating now, you’ll be helping young people in Iowa prepare to be great global citizens by providing them with opportunities to explore world cultures through CultureALL’s school programs.
